“Take the plunge and step out of your comfort zone” – Carly Rushton of Excellence Financial Consulting did the mini Game Changers course a few months ago and shares how redundancy and a surprise second baby led her to do just that.

Q. Tell us a bit about you?

Hi, I’m Carly, I’m 38 and married with an 8 year old son, Adam and a 10 month old son, Oliver. I am passionate about food, family, exercise and Excel…..I’m an Accountant, but please don’t let that put you off reading anymore.

Q. What brought you to want to make a change?

I was made redundant from a company I had been working at for 11 years; just 6 weeks after I returned from my maternity leave with Adam. It was a shock, I really hadn’t seen it coming. I toyed with the idea of consulting then, but I was lucky and landed a 3 day a week job that suited me perfectly at the time, especially as we hoped to have another baby soon.

That dream of another child didn’t quite work out though. Seven failed IVF treatments and much heartache later we decided it was time to move on from that dream and just get on with life as a family of three. I got super-healthy, took part in several triathlons (the modern lady’s mid-30s crisis!) and threw myself into my revised life plan. Then one day in early May last year, I felt different and despite being told that we would never, ever, ever get pregnant naturally, I just felt pregnant. Low and behold I took the test and 8 months later along came Oliver!

I have enjoyed my maternity leave SO much. I had come to accept that I wouldn’t have that kind of time off work again with a little baby and it has been oh so precious. Being around for Adam after school, being available for school holiday time and just generally (despite some serious lack of sleep) having more energy has been amazing. I feel blessed to have two gorgeous boys andI want to spend as much time with them as I can.

The job I left for my latest maternity leave was in Chester and on a good day that would mean a 50 minute commute each way and not getting home until 6.30pm at the earliest. It was not something I was prepared to return to and I knew I needed to resign and make some new plans.

Q. What has changed for you since?

A business associate directed me to Game Changers when I had not long had Oliver and was talking about wanting to change things. When the mini Game Changers was launched I decided to give it a go. I found it really helped me to focus on what was important to me, get organising what steps I needed to take in order to achieve my new goals and make some of those awkward first connections.

Mini Game Changers was the impetus I needed, I resigned from work and have started working on the rather long list of things I need to get my practicing certificate from my accountancy body, CIMA. I have never liked small-talk, in fact when I was younger I would shy away from dating as I found the small-talk so painful and cringeworthy. I have definitely had to push myself out of my comfort zone already and there will no doubt be much more of that to come. But you know what? It’s really not that bad, I would go so far as to say I have quite enjoyed reaching out to old colleagues and in some cases complete strangers.

I am now making baby steps back into the working world. Two afternoons a week I am working on networking and setting up the business. I will be The Excel Queen! I will be offering services to help businesses make informed decisions with the support of my Financial Modelling. Think cash flows, budgeting, new product commercials, that kind of thing. These are often ad-hoc tasks which can add great value to a business but require time and skills that may not be available.

My overriding reasons for this change is about flexibility so I can spend more time with my children. I have so many friends returning to work on terms that they are not happy with.

Q. What advice would you give for anyone thinking of making a change?

I really wish that we had better maternity pay so that more mums could afford to take longer maternity leave and that more employers were accommodating of mums returning on a part time basis. I actually think they’d be surprised just how productive we can be in 3 or 4 days!

I have some hard work ahead of me to get my business off the ground and I am really excited about what the future holds. My advice would be to take that plunge and step outside of your comfort zone!
